EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Hogan confident on Mercosur trade deal amid Brazilian meat scandal

A recent EU audit into Brazilian meat exports showed that beef, horse meat and poultry were contaminated with salmonella, E. Coli, drug residues or other substances. On 12 June, 11 Member States  in the Agriculture Council called for the immediate suspension of talks. Amid the controversy, EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Phil Hogan remained positive about the EU-Mercosur trade deal. According to his statement, the South American bloc had moderated its expectations on beef. The next round of negotiations is planned for Brussels from 3 – 7 July.
