European Commission releases agri-food export data

The European Commission's Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development presented figures that suggest Europe's beet growers are preparing for a more export-focused sugar market in the lead up to the elimination of sugar quotas in October 2017.

According to the data, exports of sugar (beet and cane) from the EU between May 2016 and April 2017 were worth EUR 696 million, compared to EUR 475 million in the previous year. This represents an increase of 46.7%. The figures also reveal an increase in sugar imports which increased from a value of EUR 1268 million to EUR 1519 million in the same time period, representing a growth of almost 20%.
